A patented hybrid variety developed in our nursery, Lagerstroemia ‘Ultra’, is a striking ornamental tree known for its large, vivid purple flower spikes that maintain their color throughout the blooming season. This exclusive cultivar is the result of a cross between Lagerstroemia indica and Lagerstroemia speciosa, selected for its exceptional floral display, improved disease resistance (especially against powdery mildew), and uniform growth habit.
‘Ultra’ is a deciduous, small to medium-sized tree with a broad, rounded crown and fine-textured, bright green foliage that turns brilliant shades of yellow, orange, or red in autumn. Its flowers are soft, frothy, and bloom with intensity on new season growth, creating a vivid presence in summer landscapes. After flowering, it produces decorative capsule-like seed clusters that add interest without becoming a nuisance.
The smooth, gray-brown bark enhances the tree’s ornamental value, even during the dormant season. ‘Ultra’ has a moderate growth rate and demonstrates excellent heat and drought tolerance, thriving in various well-drained soils (excluding saline environments). It responds well to pruning, making it ideal for shaping and maintenance.
This variety is well-suited to urban settings, private gardens, patios, and large containers. While sensitive to extreme cold, it withstands mild frosts with ease.

בעת שלכת הסתיו, צבעי השלכת – בעיקר האדום – מאפשרים לעלה להישאר מעט יותר על העץ וכך העץ “שואב” את שארית החומרים המזינים מהעלים ולנצלם עד תום. צבעי שלכת ביערות שלא בעונת הסתיו מאפשרת ליערנים לאתר בעיות.

עמידותו הרבה, והיכולת להזריע את עצמו בקלות, סייעו לו להתקיים לאורך הדורות. הוא כל כך עמיד, שפרטים בודדים שלו שרדו אפילו את פצצת האטום בהירושימה בשנת 1945, למרות שהיו במרחק קילומטר אחד או שניים בלבד ממוקד הפיצוץ. לא רק שעצים אלה שרדו, הם אףהחלימו לחלוטין לאחר זמן קצר יחסית.
