Quercus calliprinos

Quercus calliprinos is a medium, evergreen tree with a shrub-like nature that originates from the Middle East. It is very common in natural groves in the mountains, and it can usually be found alongside Ceratonia siliqua and Pistacia palaestina. The leaves bloom reddish and grow to be large and glossy in a fresh green color. The leaves are oval and have a serrated edge. The leaves are frequently replaced, and their fall display is yellow. They grow densely and cast abundant shade. The tree’s acorns are carried on a short stem, and most of the acorn is submerged within the scaled cup. The canopy shape is round. To preserve a single trunk, make sure to design the tree in its early years because it naturally tends to have multiple trunks or be shrub-like. Its growth rate is relatively slow, but auxiliary watering in the early years will significantly accelerate this. It is suitable for all parts of the country. It is very resistant to diseases and pests. The tree is beautiful and attractive, and we recommend it for parks, groves and alongside roads.

The tree was very widespread in Israel until the beginning of the 20th century, when it was cut down en masse to make room for trains, towns and agriculture. Interestingly, there is an 850-year-old specimen in Alonei Mamre!
