Powdery Mildew

Powdery mildew is a type of fungal disease that affects a wide range of plants, including vegetables, fruits, ornamental plants, and trees. It manifests as a white or gray powdery coating on leaves, stems, and flowers, and can cause stunted growth, leaf curling, reduced yield, and diminished flushing and blooming. Powdery mildew thrives in warm climates, moderate-to-high humidity, and low-light conditions, and does not require standing water to develop. The fungus spreads via wind, rain, or insects. It can be controlled using fungicides or other products alongside cultural practices such as proper plant spacing and pruning. Note that different species of powdery mildew attack different plant varieties; a fungus infecting one plant species will not necessarily infect other plants in the garden.

Diagnosis

Powdery mildew can cause various forms of damage depending on the severity of the infection and the plant species affected. Below are common symptoms:

  • White or gray powdery coating on leaves, stems, and flowers: The defining symptom of powdery mildew, caused by fungal spore growth.
  • Twisted, curled, or distorted leaves: The fungus causes leaf deformities, compromising the plant’s aesthetic appeal.
  • Reduced yield: The fungus can decrease flower and fruit production, leading to lower yields.
  • Discolored or dying foliage: In severe cases, leaves turn yellow or brown and eventually die.
  • Stunted plant growth: The fungus weakens the plant, slowing or halting growth and leaving it more susceptible to other diseases and pests.

Types of Powdery Mildew

Different powdery mildew species have distinct life cycles and growing seasons, meaning the timing and duration of infestations vary depending on the plant and fungal species.

In ornamental trees, there are 2 primary forms of powdery mildew fungi:

  • Erysiphales (Surface Mildew): Exists as spores on the foliage, with a 3-day reproductive cycle. Recommended literature calls for foliar treatment every 3 days.
  • Internal/Vascular Powdery Mildew (Leveillula): Present within the plant’s vascular system, with a 2-week reproductive cycle. Recommended literature calls for soil drench treatment every 2 weeks.

Based on our nursery experience with ornamental trees, rigid reapplication schedules are not always necessary. We recommend waiting 7-10 days post-spraying to assess improvement. If no progress is observed, apply a second treatment using an active ingredient from a different chemical class to prevent the fungus from developing pesticide resistance.

WARNING!

Pesticides are toxic, hazardous substances. Always apply according to label instructions and use the exact dosage specified on the package to prevent animal poisoning, groundwater contamination, plant phytotoxicity or damage, and human health hazards. Non-target plants near the treatment area may suffer damage if the product is not registered for their use. Certain chemical products require a licensed applicator permit. Furthermore, not all products are approved for home and garden use; some are restricted strictly to agricultural applications. Consult a licensed exterminator or plant protection specialist prior to application.

Disclaimer: This guide is based on reliable technical literature and our hands-on nursery experience. It aims to raise horticultural awareness regarding the prevention and management of powdery mildew in susceptible ornamental trees, particularly Crape Myrtles (Lagerstroemia). This guide does not constitute a recommendation or prescription to use pesticides. When using pesticides, ensure safe, cautious, and targeted spot application exclusively on ornamental trees. Usage is strictly at the user’s risk. The authors accept no liability for damage to plants, users, or the environment. Consultation with a professional agronomist is recommended.

Sequoia sempervirens
